Sunday Summary: 11 October 2015

I keep having to pinch myself to remember that it's really October. The year is flying to a close so quickly! This week I again completed three books, but that's one short of the number I need to read each week if I'm going to get to 200 by the end of the year. I should find a little more time to read next week since I have several flights and I'll be taking my suppers alone.

Where I've been reading

Ah yes! I've been in Florida. From Monday through Friday, I attended a conference in Orlando and then drove up to my sister's house just north of Orlando to spend the weekend. I enjoyed the conference very much. Many of the technical sessions were educational and I picked up some new information about the software that I use. I also enjoyed getting to spend time with various colleagues throughout the week.

What I've been reading: Completed this week

Book Cover: The Union Quilters by Jennifer Chiaverini The Union Quilters
by Jennifer Chiaverini
Format: Hardback
Source: borrowed from the library
Completed: 4 October

★★★★☆

The Union Quilters is the 17th (of 20) books in the Elm Creek Quilts series. Set in the time of the U. S. Civil War, the women of Elm Creek Valley in Pennsylvania are left behind when their husbands, sons, and brothers are mustered into the Union Army. The Bergstrom women—Anneke and her sister-in-law, Gerta—join with their neighbors to make quilts and raise funds to support the troops from their community. Weaving the account of the company's battles in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia with the stories of the community they left behind, Jennifer Chiaverini has delivered a compelling account of a war that changed the very fabric of American life.

Book Cover: The Chase by Janet Evanovich & Lee Goldberg The Chase
by Janet Evanovich & Lee Goldberg
Format: eBook
Source: borrowed from the library via Overdrive
Completed: 4 October

★★★☆☆

More chaos and high-jinx are afoot in The Chase, the second book in the popular Fox and O'Hare mystery series by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg. In The Chase, conman Nick Fox and FBI agent Kate O'Hare race against a deadline to recover a rare Chinese brass artifact. The artifact is supposedly in the Smithsonian, but it was actually stolen many years before and is now in the possession of a former White House chief of staff. When the Chinese government demands the return of the ancient artifact, it falls to Nick to recover the actual item before the Chinese discover that the one in the Smithsonian is a replica.

Book Cover: Molly Fyde and the Parsona Rescue by Hugh Howey Molly Fyde and the Parsona Rescue
by Hugh Howey
Format: eBook
Source: borrowed from Kindle Lending Library
Completed: 8 October

★★★☆☆

I hurried to read Molly Fyde and the Parsona Rescue, the book I borrowed through Amazon Prime's Kindle Lending Library in September, because I wanted to borrow another book this month. I wound up kicking myself for waiting so long to read it. I found it to be a very enjoyable story, with appealing characters.

Molly is the only female cadet in Flight Academy and wants to be a starship pilot. But the "good old boys network" relegates her to navigational duties, and then she gets kicked out of the Academy. Less than a year later, she discovered that her father's starship has been discovered on the other side of the galaxy. As her father's only heir, she travels out to retrieve his ship, daydreaming about setting up her own merchant business. The universe had other plans, however.

What I've been reading: In progress

Book Cover: Delusion in Death by J. D. Robb The 35th volume of J. D. Robb's In Death series, Delusion in Death, starts out in a Manhattan bar frequented by many of the young professionals working in the advertising and financial companies nearby. When someone releases a vapor combining LSD with several potent but illegal drugs—a cocktail guaranteed to cause hallucinations along with extreme aggression and violence—Eve and her team rush to solve the murder of 80 innocents before the killer can strike again.

Book Cover: Owl and the Japanese Circus by Kristi Charish Owl and the Japanese Circus introduces a new character to the paranormal fantasy genre. Alix is a former archeologist, now a thief of antiquities. She has assiduously avoided any entanglement with the supernatural until she is hired by a dragon to retrieve an object stolen over 3000 years before. I've barely begun reading, but it's good so far.
