Sunday Summary, 7 December 2014

After all that holiday time off, I returned to work with lots of energy; I even made a short business trip to Omaha and the travel gave me some extra time to read. While I only finished one book, I did read a significant number of pages in more than one book, so I expect to complete several books in the next week. This week as usual, I'm linking up with The Sunday Post, hosted by Kimba @ The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on the blog, showcase books and things received. Share news about what is coming up on the blog for the week ahead.

Where I've been reading

This was the first of three weeks of business travel for me. It was a very short trip to Omaha—up there on Wednesday afternoon and back home on Thursday evening. I enjoyed reading on the airplane trips and listening to an audio book as I drove from airport to hotel then again when I returned to the airport. The rest of the week I was at home in Texas.

What I've been reading

With the return to work I only finished one book this past week, in spite of having some extra time to read on the airplane trips.

Book Cover: Jinx High by Mercedes Lackey Format: eBook
Source: purchased from Amazon.com in July 2014
Completed: 3 December

★★★☆☆

Jinx High is the fourth and final novel in Mercedes Lackey's Diana Tregarde paranormal mystery series. Diana, a writer of romance novels, is also a Guardian—a witch/sorcerer charged with seeking out those who use magick for evil and setting things right. In this volume, she is invited to be the “Author in Residence” for an honors English class at a high school near Tulsa, Oklahoma, reuniting her with college buddy Larry Kestrel. Larry's son, Derek, has attracted the attention of an ancient sorcerer now inhabiting the body of Fay Harper, the most popular girl at school. Diana knows that something evil is going on, and sets a few traps to force the sorcerer into the open.

I discovered that there are a couple of recently written novellas featuring Diana Tregarde and I'd really like to read them. While this book was enjoyable in itself, it left too many threads incomplete. I'm hoping these new episodes will answer some of the remaining questions.

Book Cover: Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson Book Cover: Waistcoats & Weaponry by Gail Carriger Book Cover: Saint Peter's Fair by Ellis Peters There are three books that I've been reading this week, but which are not completed. I'm now on the last segment of Peter and the Starcatchers, with only one more hour to listen before I finish this remarkable book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. The other two, Waistcoats & Weaponry and Saint Peter's Fair are library books that I need to focus on so that I finish them before their due dates. Yes, I could renew them, but as I posted yesterday, I've picked up two more library books and the clock is ticking on them as well.

This Week on the Blog

I think I did a good job making up for slacking off the prior week. I posted two reviews, signed up for Cozy Mystery Week, and joined in this week's Book Blogger Hop as well as the weekly review of new books received.

  1. Review: The Glass Magician
  2. Review: The Here and Now
  3. Cozy Mystery Week
  4. Book Blogger Hop: 5-11 December
  5. Stacking the Shelves (14)
  6. 2015 Reading Challenges - Part 1

  1. I still haven't read Etiquette and Espionage (wasn't that the title of the first book in that series?). I got Peter and the Starcatchers from Sync this past summer, but I haven't listened to it either! Hope you have a great week!

    1. Etiquette & Espionage is indeed the first in the Finishing School series. You should listen to Peter and the Starcatchers. It's good.

    1. > your books are new to me
What can I say? I have eclectic tastes in reading. There's an old series mystery (from 1981), and old SF/F book (from 1991), a recent fantasy, and a brand-new steampunk. I recommend any of the books from this week -- though you should start the series with the first one rather than jumping in where I am.

I stopped by your blog -- thanks for pointing out those free books at Amazon. I picked up one of them.

  3. I want to try the Finishing School series. It looks really fun. I've been curious about Peter and the Starcatchers as I really like Dave Barry but haven't gotten to it. Have a great week!

    1. This week is starting out pretty good. Have already finished one book and am making great progress on two others.

Dropping by your blog today, I see you've started reading winter/Christmas books and reviewing. I'm not so organized as to have a seasonal read available. But I did pick up a free Christmas book from Amazon. (See Laura's Sunday Post for a link to several freebies.)
