Where I've been reading
I was back in my old stomping ground in the Southeast. Work took me to Atlanta for most of the week, so I decided that I would drive there instead of flying. That let me visit friends and family members along the way to-ing and fro-ing. It's roughly 14 hours to drive from my house to Atlanta. Stopping off to see people gave me nice breaks so that I didn't burn out all alone in the car. And, I had audiobooks with me to keep me entertained.
What I've been reading: Completed this week
Because I was solo road-tripping this past week, I spent a lot of time listening to audio books. I started listening to Dodger as I headed from my house down to my son's to spend part of Saturday with my grandson. As I took off for Georgia later that afternoon, I was still enjoying the story and its delivery by narrator Stephen Briggs.
When I reached the end of Dodger, I turned to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. It's a lovely fantasy for kids. It was fairly short—only 5 hours—compared to Dodger. In text, I was reading Saving Mars when I left home and completed it fairly early in the week.
The next book up on the Kindle was Master of Formalities by Scott Meyer—an advance reader copy I received from NetGalley. It was hysterically funny. Review coming soon. And on the way home, I listened to Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883, an amazing recounting of not only the climatic eruption, but the science that explains what happened and how.

What I've been reading: In progress
Having listened to the last chapter of Krakatoa, I loaded Fire with Fire into the Audible app on my iPhone and started listening to it. Since I tend to be reading more than one book at a time, I try to make sure that these are different genre. That tends to keep me from getting confused as to which book I'm currently reading. But since I'm listening to one and reading the text of the other, I'm pretty sure that confusion won't set in as I read these two SF novels.

Glad you got to catch up with friends on your travels. And the audiobooks are a good idea. I'm going somewhere next week and only have a 3.5hr drive each way but hadn't thought of the audio book idea!
ReplyDeleteI rarely drive anywhere by myself, so it can take me weeks & weeks to finish an audio book. BUT, this time I had about 26 hours alone in the car and listened to two whole books.
DeleteI never learned to enjoy having music in the background, and most of "talk radio" is pretty strange, so the audio books give me something to think about besides the white & yellow lines on the highway. {grin}
