Stacking the Shelves (27)

This week I borrowed a couple of books from the library and even spent some of my gift card money on some new books. New books this week are from several genres: there's mystery, historical and contemporary; science fiction, space military, and YA romance; and a psychological thriller. I think I need to take a week off to catch up with all the new books I've received over the past two weeks!

From the library:

Book Cover: A Dangerous Place by Jacqueline Winspear When I stopped by the library last week, one of the librarians mentioned that she was just about to finish reading A Dangerous Place, the latest volume in Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series. She asked if I wanted to read it after she finished and of course I said “yes”, so she put my name on the reserve list. At the beginning of the week I received a notification that the book was available to be picked up. Hubby picked it up for me on Wednesday and I've already finished reading it and have returned it to the library for the next reader.

Book Cover: The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing by Tarqiun Hall The other book I picked up at the library this week is The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing by Tarquin Hall. I selected it to satisfy the category of PI Crime in the Eclectic Reader Challenge, since it's the second book in the Vish Puri, Most Private Investigator series, The mysteries are set in India and while the crimes are serious, Tarquin Hall approaches them with a good dose of humor.

For review:

Book Cover: True Calling by Siobhan Davis While I was bouncing around the Internet exploring various book-related blogs, I stumbled across Lola's Blog Tours. And, you might guess that I signed up to review a book: True Calling by Siobhan Davis. True Calling is aimed at the young adult market—a dystopian science fiction romance. The premise of an elite population on a high tech colony planet was terribly appealing and I was pleased to find the eBook in my mail within a day or two of signing up. Look for a review in a couple of weeks.

Purchased (gift card):

Book Cover: Kris Longknife: Daring by Mike Shepherd I've had so much fun reading the Kris Longknife books. I'm going to be sad when I have finished the series. Having finished reading Kris Longknife: Redoubtable last week, I held off buying the next episode until I had read a couple of the library books I had borrowed. But I just couldn't wait any longer, so I purchased Kris Longknife: Daring, the ninth book in the series. I've read a couple of chapters already.

Book Cover: The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins I'm a sucker for a good recommendation. When I was chatting with a co-worker, he told me that I should rush out and get a copy of The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. He raved about how good it was and noted that it was responsible for a couple of late nights as he found himself so involved in the story that he could hardly bear to put the book down. I was hooked. And, rather than join the queue at the library to get a copy, I just broke down and spent part of the gift card money on my Amazon account.

How about you? Any new books? You're invited to tell us all about it by joining the fun at Stacking the Shelves. According to the reviewers at Tynga's Reviews who host the meme:

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

    1. You know -- that's one reason why I normally rely on the library. That way if the book is just not for me, I haven't invested anything other than time. But, since I respect the opinion of the co-worker who recommended it, I broke down and purchased it.

  4. Sounds like so many wonderful books! I'm interested in seeing your thoughts about Girl on the Train. Haven't read it myself but I have seen it around for a while.

I was wanting to follow your blog but it requires followers to have a facebook and I'm not with the times. So, I don't have one but I will still keep up with your posts. Hope you have a wonderful day! :)

    1. Oh -- everyone will see my opinion of The Girl on the Train after I read it.

This blog is syndicated through the normal RSS/ATOM feeds. You can subscribe by using this URL --> http://elsireads.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default. I thought there was an automatic link somewhere on the page, but I don't see it. I'll have to track that down.

Also, I wasn't aware that the Networked Blogs option required a Facebook ID. I'll check into that as well. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

    1. All of my visitors this week seem to have heard about The Girl on the Train, so at least I picked up a book that's making the rounds. I have a couple of books in front of it -- library books that have due dates and one review book -- and then I'll be plunging into it.

    1. New books this week were kind of all over the spectrum. Mysteries, SF, YA. I made the mistake of stopping by your STS post this week and saw a couple of covers that just grabbed me. If the blurbs look as good as the covers, I'm afraid my wishlist will have grown -- AGAIN!

    1. I am looking forward to reading these new books. Some weeks the books are interesting, but just ho-hum and some weeks they are outstanding and I can hardly wait to start reading them.
