Stacking the Shelves (27)

This week I borrowed a couple of books from the library and even spent some of my gift card money on some new books. New books this week are from several genres: there's mystery, historical and contemporary; science fiction, space military, and YA romance; and a psychological thriller. I think I need to take a week off to catch up with all the new books I've received over the past two weeks!

 

From the library:

When I stopped by the library last week, one of the librarians mentioned that she was just about to finish reading A Dangerous Place, the latest volume in Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series. She asked if I wanted to read it after she finished and of course I said “yes”, so she put my name on the reserve list. At the beginning of the week I received a notification that the book was available to be picked up. Hubby picked it up for me on Wednesday and I've already finished reading it and have returned it to the library for the next reader.

The other book I picked up at the library this week is The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing by Tarquin Hall. I selected it to satisfy the category of PI Crime in the Eclectic Reader Challenge, since it's the second book in the Vish Puri, Most Private Investigator series, The mysteries are set in India and while the crimes are serious, Tarquin Hall approaches them with a good dose of humor.

For review:

While I was bouncing around the Internet exploring various book-related blogs, I stumbled across Lola's Blog Tours. And, you might guess that I signed up to review a book: True Calling by Siobhan Davis. True Calling is aimed at the young adult market—a dystopian science fiction romance. The premise of an elite population on a high tech colony planet was terribly appealing and I was pleased to find the eBook in my mail within a day or two of signing up. Look for a review in a couple of weeks.

Purchased (gift card):

I've had so much fun reading the Kris Longknife books. I'm going to be sad when I have finished the series. Having finished reading Kris Longknife: Redoubtable last week, I held off buying the next episode until I had read a couple of the library books I had borrowed. But I just couldn't wait any longer, so I purchased Kris Longknife: Daring, the ninth book in the series. I've read a couple of chapters already.

I'm a sucker for a good recommendation. When I was chatting with a co-worker, he told me that I should rush out and get a copy of The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. He raved about how good it was and noted that it was responsible for a couple of late nights as he found himself so involved in the story that he could hardly bear to put the book down. I was hooked. And, rather than join the queue at the library to get a copy, I just broke down and spent part of the gift card money on my Amazon account.
