Sunday Summary: 8 February 2015

T. S. Eliot said “April is the cruelest month...”, but for me it seems that February deserves that title. Here in Texas, it's alternately warm and cold. Totally unpredictable, requiring two wardrobes on hand. At least when I travel to northern locations, I know exactly what to pack in my suitcase—in addition to plenty of books.

Where I've been reading

This week I was in Green Bay. You know something? It's really cold in Green Bay this time of the year. I was lucky, though. The storm that hit the northeast USA had very little effect on me. I did have a bit of a disruption on my outbound trip on Monday—primarily because so many flights in and out of Chicago had been cancelled on Sunday. But once I arrived in Green Bay, there weren't any weather problems. I saw some light snow on Tuesday evening and that was it.

What I've been reading: Completed this week

Book Cover: A Modern Witch by Debora Geary Format: eBook
Source: borrowed from Kindle Learning Library
Completed: 5 February

★★★☆☆

Every time I see a book that looks interesting and which is available through the Kindle Lending Library, I add it to a special wish list so I can remember what books I was thinking about borrowing. Unfortunately, I failed to note just where I ran across A Modern Witch. I really would like to thank whomever recommended it to me. It was a delightful book and “modern” says it all. Combining web sites, online chat, and spell casting, Debora Geary has introduced a charming cast of characters. Fortunately, there are at least 5 more books in the series—and I intended to read them all.

Book Cover: The Leper of Saint Giles by Ellis Peters Format: eBook
Source: borrowed from Sanger Public Library via Freading
Completed: 6 February

★★★☆☆

The Leper of Saint Giles is the fifth book in the Brother Cadfael mysteries by Ellis Peters. The indomitable Brother Cadfael is challenged to sort out the fortunes of a young girl who is being forced by her guardians into a marriage to a much older man. As you might expect, the groom is murdered and it now falls to Cadfael to track down who did it and make sure that everything comes out right in the end.

What I've been reading: In progress

Book Cover: Peter and the Shadow Thieves by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson Book Cover: Hyperion by Dan Simmons Book Cover: The Iron Wyrm Affair by Lilith Saintcrow While I didn't listen to Peter and the Shadow Thieves, this past week, I expect to make a lot of progress this coming week during my trip to Toronto. Once again I'll be alone in the car—listening as I go from airport to hotel to meetings, etc. I'm also reading Dan Simmon's award winning Hyperion. This SF novel was first published 25 years ago, and I'm really glad that the Flights of Fantasy group at Goodreads has selected it as one of their February group reads. And lastly, I keep one book loaded onto my cell phone so that I can read when no other books are at hand. Right now, that book is The Iron Wyrm Affair by Lilith Saintcrow, a steampunk mystery. It's rousing good fun.

    1. Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. I'm in the same situation -- no matter how much acclaim Dan Simmons had received, I just never got around to reading any of his books. I'm really glad it was selected for the book club.

  2. I always loved the Brother Cadfael series. I watched it on TV and often thought of reading the books. My post: http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/2015/02/snowday.html

    1. Steph -- I jumped into the Cadfael books shortly after viewing an episode of the TV series on Masterpiece Mystery. One strange thing is that I definitely see the actor's face while reading. He's now the very personification of the good Welsh brother.

I liked your post -- and I'm very glad I don't live where you get multiple *feet* of snow.
