Stacking the Shelves (37)

Still sticking to my plan to not buy any books. New books on my shelves this week are library books, a gift, and the weekly freebies from the SYNC audiobook series.

During the summer, SYNC releases two audiobooks every Thursday and they are available to download for only one week. This week, the two audiobooks share a theme of World War II. Rose Under Fire tells the story of an American pilot taken prisoner by the Germans, while Anne Frank Remembered is a memoir by Miep Gies who provided refuge for the Frank family in Amsterdam.

From the library:

Book Cover: The Target by David Baldacci Normally I change things up, alternating books in different series and even different genres. But I enjoyed listening to The Hit so much that I decided to go ahead and start reading the next Will Robie thriller, The Target. And this time, I decided that I'd try borrowing an audiobook from the library using their Overdrive application. It was totally easy to borrow, download, and transfer to my iPhone. The biggest challenge is having to finish listening before the borrow expires in three weeks.

Book Cover: J D Robb In Death Collection, books 26-29 I was a bit surprised when the notification came that this book had been checked out to me. First, I didn't remember putting a hold on it (back in early May), and secondly, I shouldn't have ticked the "automatically check out book" option in the Overdrive application. But regardless, I'm glad I now have this book on my Kindle. The Omnibus contains Strangers in Death, Salvation in Death, Promises in Death, and Kindred in Death.

If you haven't experienced J D Robb's In Death mystery series, you've missed some good reading. Eve Dallas is a lieutenant in the NYC police department in the 2050s. So the books are set just a little ways in the future, which allows Robb to have cars that fly as well as roll on roads, space stations, and Pepsi supplied in tubes. But otherwise, the series doesn't have too much of a science fiction-y feel to it.

Gift:

Book Cover: Kris Longknife: Furious by Mike Shepherd In the previous volume of the Kris Longknife saga, Kris faced down hostile aliens and most of the ships in her fleet are destroyed. So, with multiple planetary governments clamoring for her head, she's sent to a backwater planet to run routine patrols. But, Kris is not content to behave herself, so soon she's on the run, hunted by military and civilian authorities.

Freebies:

Book Cover: Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein SYNC's first audiobook this week is Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein. Wein, author of the critically-acclaimed and best-selling Code Name Verity, delivers another stunning WWII thriller. The unforgettable story of Rose Justice, an American pilot taken prisoner by the Germans, is forged from heart-wrenching courage, resolve, and the slim, bright chance of survival.

Book Cover: Anne Frank Remembered by Miep Gies For two years, Miep Gies and her husband helped hide the Franks and other Jewish families during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. Now her memoir, Anne Frank Remembered details her own upbringing, the decision to help her boss and his family, and that fateful day when they were captured. Read as a companion to Anne Frank's own diary, Gies provides insight into the war-time occupation and its effect upon innocent civilians.
