Finally I've been able to stick to my plan to not buy any books. The only new books on my shelves this week are the weekly freebies from the SYNC audiobook series. Every Thursday, two new books are released and are available for only one week, so I'm very careful to download each weekend.
This week, the two books share a theme of Mother Nature, and in particular individuals who must survive at sea.
Freebies:
In The Living, Matt de la Peña tells a story of Shy, a young man who takes a summer job on a cruise ship. He figures it will be almost like a vacation—free room and board, hanging around the pool, plenty of hot girls to get to know—in exchange for some easy work. But when a massive earthquake hits California, Shy finds himself adrift in the Pacific when the resulting tsunami washes him overboard.
Now considered a modern classic, Sebastian Junger's The Perfect Storm describes the events of October 1991 when a freak meteorological combination of two weather events culminated in wave heights over 100 feet, sustained winds of 75mph, and over $200 million in damage along the eastern seaboard. It was made into a major motion picture in 2000, starring George Clooney and Mark Walberg as two of the crew aboard fishing boat Andrea Gail which is caught in the massive storm.
How about you? Any new books? You're invited to tell us all about it by joining the fun at Stacking the Shelves. According to the reviewers at Tynga's Reviews who host the meme:
Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

The Perfect storm was a great movie, I bet the book is even better. Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteI didn't see the movie. I hope that the reader is a good narrator. It will be quite some while before I start listening to either of these books.
DeleteThe Perfect Storm was a decent movie, but the book probably has stuff that wasn't in the movie. Your other book is new to me.
ReplyDeleteGrace @ Books of Love
Grace, most of the free books offered by SYNC are new to me. However, it's a great way to be introduced to a new author with no risk.
DeleteBoth books look tempting...thanks for sharing. Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. I see that you're participating in the mini-Bloggiesta. I seem to miss this each time. I think I need to set an alarm/alert for the next one.
DeleteGreat haul! Where did you get the Living for free? I've been wanting to read it for a while!
ReplyDeleteKrystianna @ Downright Dystopian
It's still available through Wednesday. The SYNC audiobook program is designed to promote summer reading by young adults and they offer two free books every week, May through August. Go here --> http://www.audiobooksync.com/ <-- to download the weekly offering.
DeleteI participate in Sync Audio too. Good ones this week! Thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to discover the SYNC summer listening program. Just wish I had found it ealier.
DeleteThere's a lot of people pledging to stop buying books. I hope the publishing industry doesn't fall apart. I never bought them in the first place. I have a great library and can always get what I want. Sometimes I have to wait a little while, but there's always another book on the list!
ReplyDeleteThe reason I pledged to avoid buying books is because I have 2000 unread books in bookshelves in my house. And then there's the 2500 or more eBooks I have ...
DeleteI do allow myself to buy books with gift certificates, so there are a couple of new books each month, no matter my pledge.
And yes -- I have a great (though tiny) library that will get me any book I want. If the library doesn't have the book, they'll get it from a nearby library as long as it's at least 6 months old.
Thanks for dropping by.
