Catching up - Steps to the Altar and Hour of the Hunter

Just because I didn't post anything, it doesn't mean that I stopped reading. Quite the opposite. I've been reading whenever I can find free time. That tends to be when I'm in motion -- travelling in the car or airplane.

I can't begin to list every book I've read since last September. Heck, I don't even remember what I've read. But, here's the books I finished just the past couple of weeks.

Steps to the Altar by Earlene Fowler

This is the ninth book in the series and one of the best so far. More of the book focused on the relationship between Benni and Gabe. The murder she's solving is half a century old, so there's no particular urgency there. Instead, the tensions come from her own marital problems and the pending weddings of Elvia to Emory and Grandma Dove to Isaac.

Hour of the Hunter by J.A. Jance

This was a great find at a friend's house. The characters in this book are not related to either of J. A. Jance's two main detectives. I found the entire story disturbing—the villain in this book is truly evil. The good guys prevail, but not totally unscathed. I particularly liked the mutual acceptance of Papago traditional beliefs and Christianity.

Bouncing Off the Moon, by David Gerrold

All right! Another out of sequence posting. Bouncing Off the Moon by David Gerrold is the second (of 3, I think) book about the Dingillian brothers. Having successfully left earth just before the total collapse of the economy & all government/social infrastructure, they're now bouncing down to the moon. Once there, they stumble across interplanetary intrigue and industrial espionage. As with its predecessor, Jumping off the Planet, this was an enjoyable read. I particularly enjoyed the speculations on how a moon-based culture would evolve.

Summer Pleasures, by Nora Roberts

I actually read this book before I read Wild Mountain Thyme. Oh well, taking a look at how long it's been since I logged anything, you can see that I'm really not keeping up with my reading log. Summer Pleasures by Nora Roberts contains two short novels of the formula of girl meets guy; girl doesn't really like guy; girl & guy have torrid sex; girl & guy fall madly in love & live happily ever after. Definitely recreational reading.

Wild Mountain Thyme, by Rosamunde Pilcher

When Mom dropped off a box of books a month ago, I set this one aside to read. (Most of the books wound up at the second-hand bookstore.) Well, I finally got around to it, and enjoyed it very much. Wild Mountain Thyme wasn't overly complicated, just a sweet little romance.

Scarlet Feather, by Maeve Binchy

I forgot to log this one. I started reading Scarlet Feather several months ago & then stuck it back on the shelf. Pulled it out when I finished Stranger in Paradise and read it along the road. It's good -- though not as good as other books by Maeve Binchy.

Kingdom of Cages, by Sarah Zettel

Wow! I found a book by Sarah Zettel that I hadn't read, and I'm entranced. It's a fascinating story, and I'm tearing through it very fast.

Logging a few books

Gee -- let's see. Not only did I finish A Plague of Angels, I also finished Stranger in Paradise. It was very good, just required me to be in the right mood to read it. Turns out that it is the first in a series, so I guess I'll look up other books in the series and get them into my reading stack.
